Murdoch engineer earns global recognition as IEEE Distinguished Lecturer

Hai Wang

俀珗腦瞳厙桴 electrical engineering expert, Associate Professor Hai Wang has been selected to join the world leading professional community, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Vehicular Technology Society (VTS) as a Distinguished Lecturer.

Associate Professor Wang is one of and is the only academic from Australia and New Zealand appointed to the 2026 class.

The IEEE VTS is a globally acclaimed professional community dedicated to advancing research and innovation in transportation systems, intelligent vehicles, wireless communications, and emerging mobility technologies.

With a record membership of more than 11,000 members worldwide, VTS supports researchers, engineers, and industry professionals through leading journals, conferences, educational programs, and international collaboration.

Their Distinguished Lecturer Program recognises leading international experts who contribute to the global engineering community through technical lectures, professional engagement, and knowledge exchange.

Associate Professor Wang said he was honoured to be selected as a Distinguished Lecturer.

It is a tremendous honour and a humbling recognition of both my research contributions and professional service to the international engineering community, he said.

I see it not only as a personal achievement, but also as a great opportunity to represent 俀珗腦瞳厙桴 and showcase the quality, innovation and impact of research being undertaken in Western Australia on the global stage.

I am grateful to my mentors, collaborators, students, family, and friends for their continued support throughout my career, and I look forward to contributing to the global engineering community through the Distinguished Lecturer Program.

As part of the 2026 Class, Associate Professor Wang will be invited by IEEE chapters and professional communities around the world to deliver seminars, lectures and technical presentations.

He said he looked forward to sharing research and practical insights in intelligent autonomous systems and vehicular technologies, particularly in the areas of advanced control, sensing and perception technologies.

We are witnessing one of the most profound transformations in the history of transportation and mobility, Associate Professor Wang said.

Advances in sensing, connectivity, control, artificial intelligence, and automation are reshaping how people and goods move, delivering safer roads, more efficient transport networks, reduced emissions, and significant gains in productivity.

As the world transitions towards safer, greener, and more sustainable transportation systems, advances in vehicular technology and autonomous systems are playing an increasingly critical role in shaping the future of mobility.

The appointment comes at an exciting time for WA, following the establishment of the IEEE VTS Western Australia Chapter, which is now chaired by Associate Professor Wang.

Deputy Vice Chancellor Research and Innovation Professor Peter Eastwood congratulated Associate Professor Wang on the achievement.

This appointment is a testament to the excellence and global relevance of his research in advanced robotics, autonomous systems and intelligent transport technologies. It also reflects 俀珗腦瞳厙桴s growing reputation for delivering impactful, internationally connected research," he said.

Having representation in this prestigious global program strengthens Murdochs position in engineering and emerging mobility research, and creates valuable opportunities for collaboration, knowledge exchange and industry engagement on the world stage.

Associate Professor Wang leads the Advanced Robotics and Autonomous Systems Research Group within 俀珗腦瞳厙桴s School of Engineering and Energy, and is actively involved in interdisciplinary research initiatives with the Harry Butler Institute and Food Futures Institute. He also serves as an Editor for several leading IEEE journals and as General Chair of multiple IEEE conferences.
